Understanding Sri Lanka’s Weather Patterns

Sri Lanka’s climate is shaped by its varied topography, from coastal plains to central highlands, and by the Southwest and Northeast monsoon wind systems. Across a year, weather can be understood in four seasonal phases that help travelers choose the best destinations and activities.

First Inter-Monsoon Season

March - April
  • Weather: Afternoon and evening thunderstorm-type rain is common.
  • Rainfall: Most regions receive around 100-250mm; southwestern hill slopes can exceed 700mm (Keragala about 771mm).
  • Regional Note: The Jaffna Peninsula is drier than most areas in this season (around 78-83mm).

Southwest Monsoon Season

May - September
  • Weather: Windier conditions reduce the earlier heat; rain may occur day or night, especially in the southwest.
  • Rainfall: Ranges from about 100mm to above 3000mm, with very high totals in western mid-elevations (Ginigathhena, Watawala, Norton).
  • Regional Note: Southwestern coastal areas receive about 1000-1600mm, while northern and southeastern areas are comparatively lower.

Second Inter-Monsoon Season

October - November
  • Weather: Afternoon or evening thunderstorms are frequent; Bay of Bengal depressions and cyclones can influence conditions.
  • Rainfall: The island sees one of its most even rainfall distributions, with most places receiving over 400mm.
  • Regional Note: Strong winds and widespread rain may trigger localized floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.

Northeast Monsoon Season

December - February
  • Weather: Cooler, drier winds create pleasant daytime sunshine and comfortable nights, with chillier mornings in some areas.
  • Rainfall: Highest rainfall appears in the north and eastern hill slopes (Kobonella around 1281mm).
  • Regional Note: Western coastal zones are much drier in this period (for example Chilaw around 177mm).
