Sacred Pilgrimage Site
Kataragama is one of the most sacred pilgrimage towns in southeastern Sri Lanka and is respected by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and the indigenous Vedda community, making it a symbol of religious harmony. The town is home to the famous Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya dedicated to Kataragama Deviyo, where daily poojas are held. Important nearby sacred sites include Kiri Vehera, an ancient Buddhist stupa, as well as Sella Kataragama, Wedasiti Kanda, and the Al-Khidr Mosque, reflecting the town’s multi-religious heritage. Kataragama is also famous for the annual Kataragama Esala Festival held in July or August, featuring colorful processions with dancers, drummers, and decorated elephants, while many devotees complete the traditional Pada Yatra pilgrimage on foot. Today, Kataragama attracts thousands of pilgrims and visitors each year who come to experience its deep spiritual and cultural significance.
